John Tierney – Runner
I’m a marathon runner. Other distances are available, but I’m not stopping till I crack the nut that is a 2:45. I might not stop then.
Muddled my way through magazine articles and web forum advice and got down to a 3:18 marathon from a first go of 4:09. With help of some great friends at a running club got down to 2:53. With a limited amount to time to train, and to think about what training to do I want to make sure I make the most of what I’m up to. There is also a distinct lack of people I know who’ve run faster marathons so I wanted to learn from someone who’s been there. Working with Hywel helps me switch off from thinking too much about what I should do, and focus on executing the sessions. I need to be stretched to train differently to get different results.
There’s at least 3000 annual miles of cycling going on, it beats the pub these days. There are ideas of setting some cycling goals soon, but for now I’m content to attempt keeping up with my mates and still coming through for my turn on the front after 80 miles. I do not own a wetsuit.
John’s training & physio
5 Valleys Physio keeps me training consistently, which is key to endurance improvement. If I’ve a niggle I get it checked and treated early, and this keeps me on the road. A sports massage before races or after big training blocks help me to maximise performance and recover faster.
I work with Jane to address glute imbalance and activation timing issues with acupuncture and manipulation has led onto a program of strength work. This will help me remain injury free long term as well as hold form for longer in races and eek out those 4 minutes I need for a 2:44 and a place on the UK marathon championship start line at London 2018.
Best so far: 2:53 Marathon
John’s 2016/17 targets
- Sub 2:45 marathon and remain injury free. There are B targets, but they can be assessed after London Marathon.
- John battled on – In the Naunton (nearly) 19 on Sunday John battled on and finished in joint 9th with his training partner Darren Jewell.
- John quickens at the Tomikuji marathon – The Tomikuji Marathon celebrated its 26th year, a challenging hilly course run in hot & humid conditions. This didn’t deter John Tierney from putting in a very strong performance
