Clicking, or clunking, jaw occurs in your Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). This is the most used joint in the body. Your TMJs are involved with eating, talking, breathing and facial expressions. When things go wrong with your TMJ it is known as Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD).

What causes clicking jaw?

The main sources of TMD are

  • Masticatory muscle dysfunction,
  • Issues with the TMJ articular disc
  • Nocturnal grinding of teeth
  • Occlusal Problems such as poor bite

Along with ageing poor posture can lead to the sources of TMD. It can also be caused by other issues which lead to poor posture such as neck and shoulder pain. TMD can also lead to headaches and migraines due to persistent pain.

How to treat clicking jaw

Physiotherapy can efficiently treat issues and pain associated with TMD. A thorough diagnosis will help identify if there are other issues leading to TMD. Treatments can include:
